Teaching Philosophy
My teaching philosophy as an Art teacher at Higginson Lewis 3-8 School is deeply rooted in the
belief that every student has unique talents and potential waiting to be discovered and nurtured.
Over my 4.5 years at the school, I have been dedicated to providing a differentiated studio-style
art learning experience tailored to the needs and interests of our urban student demographic.
First and foremost, I believe in creating a safe and inclusive learning environment where
students feel comfortable expressing themselves creatively. I foster a culture of respect,
collaboration, and open communication, allowing students to explore their creativity without fear
of judgment.
In my classroom, I emphasize the importance of student-centered learning. I provide
opportunities for students to take ownership of their artistic journey by encouraging them to
make choices, set goals, and reflect on their progress. Through projects that are relevant and
engaging, I aim to inspire curiosity and a love for art that extends beyond the classroom.
Recognizing the diverse backgrounds and learning styles of my students, I employ a
differentiated approach to instruction. I tailor my teaching methods and materials to meet the
individual needs and interests of each student, ensuring that every child has the opportunity to
succeed. Whether through visual, auditory, or kinesthetic means, I strive to make learning
accessible to all.
Furthermore, I integrate technology and real-world connections into my curriculum to enhance
student learning and relevance. By incorporating digital tools, such as graphic design software
or virtual museum tours, I expose students to new possibilities and prepare them for the digital
age. I also highlight the connections between art and other disciplines, such as history, science,
and math, to foster interdisciplinary learning and critical thinking skills.
Above all, I believe in the transformative power of art education. Beyond teaching technical
skills, I aim to cultivate creativity, empathy, and resilience in my students. By instilling a sense of
pride and confidence in their artistic abilities, I empower them to become lifelong learners and
advocates for the arts in their communities.
In summary, my teaching philosophy revolves around providing a differentiated, student-
centered, and inclusive studio-style art learning experience that inspires creativity, fosters
personal growth, and prepares students for success in an ever-changing world.
